Three contiguous parcels of land in Washington's Near Southeast neighborhood have been set aside to become a 1.8 acre rectilinear park, anchoring the area's burgeoning redevelopment. Situated between "I" and "M" Streets and between 2nd Street and 2nd Place SE on the southern edge of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, Canal Park will complete the connection between the District's Garfield Park to the north and the Anacostia Waterfront parks to the south.

The three blocks on U.S. Res. 17B, 17C, and 17D were once part of a functioning canal system resulting from Pierre L'Enfant's visionary plan for Washington (see History). The new park will evoke the original and re-establish the link between the U.S. Capitol and the Anacostia River, while at the same time become a meeting place for the people living and working in Washington's re-emerging Navy Yard neighborhood.
